That was harder than you thought it’d be, wasn’t it?
I got 55/88 correct, or 63 percent. The quiz average is 60 percent, so I was right around the middle.
I grew up near Sandusky and Cedar Point, then moved down to Southeast Ohio after college. Those areas of the state weren’t much of a challenge. I even got some of the far western counties in John Boehner territory.
For most of the western part of Ohio, though, it was like blindly chucking darts at the board: Shelby, Miami, Champaign, Clark, Logan, Union, Hardin, Marion, Madison … brutal.
Any guess as to which county was the most commonly correct pick?
That would be Ashtabula County, with 73 percent of quiz takers placing it in the right spot. It’s the largest county in Ohio by geographic area, and has a distinctive shape in the top-right corner. Makes sense. The second- and third-most correct counties were nearby Cuyahoga and Lake. There must be a lot of Clevelanders taking this quiz.
The county that bedeviled the most people? That would be Harrison County, with just 50.5 percent knowing where it is. Harrison is one of the least-populated counties in Ohio (around 16,000 residents). My guess is that people confuse it with the city of Harrison, which is in the opposite side of the state near Cincinnati.
One of the most popular rooms in the Ohio Statehouse is the Map Room, which showcases all 88 counties in various types of marble. I’m thinking I should spend more time there in between reporting sessions studying up on where all the counties are.
